We’ve published four new toolbox talks this week to support consistent safety and compliance standards across a range of vehicle types.

Each version focuses on daily walkaround checks and defect reporting, tailored to the specific needs of different drivers, fleets and operating environments.

Walkaround checks are a legal requirement and a critical part of keeping vehicles safe, roadworthy and fit for service. These updated toolbox talks help reinforce good habits, reduce operational risk, and support regulatory compliance across mixed fleets – whether you’re managing heavy goods vehicles, passenger transport or light commercial vans.

Walkaround checks and defect reporting toolbox talks are available for:

• HGV (UK) – Designed for goods vehicle drivers in the UK, this version covers all key checks including internal and external components, trailer systems, and additional safety equipment such as blind spot cameras and sideguards. It also outlines how defects can affect an operator’s OCRS rating and increase the risk of roadside stops and enforcement action
• HGV (Ireland) – Adapted for fleet operators in the Republic of Ireland, this version reflects Irish terminology, legal responsibilities and road safety expectations, while maintaining consistency with the UK version in terms of layout, structure and driver obligations
• PCV – Aimed at bus and coach drivers, this version includes additional checks related to passenger safety, emergency equipment and accessibility features. It supports operators working in public transport, education and private hire settings
• Van – Tailored for light commercial vehicle users, this version supports service, trade and delivery fleets with practical guidance on daily vehicle condition checks, light vehicle trailers and load safety.

Each version follows a clean, structured format for easy reading and are supported by DVSA or RSA video guidance.
