Success story
Flannery Plant Hire
Digital communication that works for Flannery Plant Hire

With a workforce operating across nine depots and sites throughout the UK, Flannery Plant Hire faced a challenge familiar to many in the transport and construction sectors: how to deliver consistent, timely, and safety-critical information to mobile staff working on varying shifts and in different locations.
In 2021, John Moran, Director at Flannery Plant Hire, identified The Driver Handbook as the solution. The software’s blend of industry-standard content, combined with customisable company-specific modules, made it the perfect fit. The company rebranded it internally as the “Flannery App” and began rollout across its driver base that summer.
“Our drivers are often on the road, away from depots and offices. The consistency we get from sharing updates and information via The Driver Handbook gives me confidence that everyone is receiving the same message, at the same time, wherever they are,” said Moran.
The Flannery App gives drivers access to the core HGV handbook content included with The Driver Handbook platform. However, the true value for Flannery lies in its ability to create and distribute company-specific information – tailored policies, procedures, customer requirements, and safety alerts – direct to drivers’ devices using TDHConnect, the web-based content management system.
This agility has proven essential. “We now have a much more flexible approach to driver communications,” Moran added. “The app has become an integral tool in our transport operation. It allows us to prove that content has not only been sent, but actually read and understood.”
The success of the app with Flannery’s HGV drivers quickly led the company to expand its use. The same platform is now used by its team of mobile plant engineers, who also operate across the UK. These users access critical Health and Safety information, including Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS), directly through the Flannery App.
“An unexpected bonus was the ability to digitise and store a full library of plant manufacturer workshop manuals in the app,” Moran explained. “Previously, engineers would carry bulky folders full of technical specs, which could easily go out of date or be difficult to search. Now they have instant access to the latest information, anywhere, anytime.”
With the Flannery App deployed across teams from Aberdeen to Cornwall, the company has standardised communication, improved safety awareness, and dramatically reduced the administrative burden of managing paper documentation.
“The Driver Handbook gives us peace of mind,” said Moran. “We know our people—drivers and engineers—are always up to date, well-informed, and equipped with everything they need to work safely and effectively. It helps reduce risk and support the high standard of service we pride ourselves on.”
Flannery’s story is a perfect example of how The Driver Handbook can be tailored to meet the real-world operational needs of dynamic, dispersed workforces. What began as a driver communications solution has become a business-critical tool, uniting teams and supporting compliance, efficiency, and safety from one centralised digital platform.
