Driving for work has always carried risk—but following the introduction of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, those risks have become significantly greater for professional drivers. Effective from 28 June 2022, this legislation brings tougher sentencing for drivers who cause harm through careless, inconsiderate, or dangerous driving.

The updated law introduces a maximum two-year prison sentence and a 12-month driving ban for causing serious injury by careless driving. For the most serious offences – causing death by dangerous driving or while under the influence – life imprisonment is now a legal possibility.

These are no longer rare, worst-case scenarios. Everyday distractions like tuning the radio, tailgating, or glancing at paperwork can now carry devastating legal and personal consequences. The law has changed, and the margin for error has narrowed.
