Causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving

Driving for work has always carried risk—but following the introduction of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, those risks have become significantly greater for professional drivers. Effective from 28 June 2022, this legislation brings tougher sentencing for drivers who cause harm through careless, inconsiderate, or dangerous driving.
This month’s Sentencing law toolbox talk focuses on these changes and what they mean for drivers on the road today. It’s vital that every driver understands that even a brief lapse in concentration could now lead to life-changing consequences – not just for victims, but for the driver themselves.
The session covers:
- New penalties for causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving
- Legal consequences of causing death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs
- Maximum sentencing for causing death by dangerous driving
The updated law introduces a maximum two-year prison sentence and a 12-month driving ban for causing serious injury by careless driving. For the most serious offences – causing death by dangerous driving or while under the influence – life imprisonment is now a legal possibility.
These are no longer rare, worst-case scenarios. Everyday distractions like tuning the radio, tailgating, or glancing at paperwork can now carry devastating legal and personal consequences. The law has changed, and the margin for error has narrowed.
Now more than ever, driver professionalism, focus, and safe habits must be at the forefront of every journey. Make sure your drivers are up to date and aware – because ignorance is no defence when lives are on the line.
