Toolbox talk highlights that net zero matters for drivers

Content news

The UK is already feeling the effects of climate change. The Met Office confirmed that summer 2025 was the hottest on record, followed by record-breaking rainfall in September across parts of southern England. Storms are also becoming more frequent – a decade ago we saw two or three major storms a year, now the average is closer to seven.

Clean Air Zones, Low Emission Zones and Euro VI engines have reduced local air pollution, but they don’t solve the bigger issue of greenhouse gases. Even the cleanest modern diesel engine produces CO₂ – around 2.7kg for every litre burned. Domestic transport remains the UK’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, producing well over 100 million tonnes CO₂e.

This is why net zero matters. It’s not just a government target – it’s about business survival. Customers now expect transport operators to measure and report their emissions, often under the GHG Protocol, and to demonstrate year-on-year progress. Vehicle emissions are a major part of this reporting, which means drivers are on the front line.

Our toolbox talk explains:

  • The difference between air quality and climate change
  • Key terms like CO₂, CO₂e and tailpipe emissions
  • The role of reporting, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
  • Cleaner fuels and energy such as HVO, biogas, electric and hydrogen vehicles
  • Why net zero matters for the environment, for business culture and for long-term business sustainability

Every driver has the power to make a difference. Efficient driving, avoiding idling, planning routes, reporting defects and embracing digital tools all cut emissions and reduce waste.

Climate change is a global emergency – and net zero is how we respond. Drivers playing their part, not only protects the environment, they help protect the future of the business.
