Know the zones

Content news

To address this, National Highways has launched its #KnowTheZones campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the areas around heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) that are invisible to the driver. The campaign encourages all road users to be more mindful when driving near large vehicles, particularly when overtaking or passing on the nearside.

Blind spots exist at the front, rear, and both sides of an HGV, with the most dangerous areas being alongside the passenger side and directly behind the trailer. While modern HGVs are often equipped with mirrors, cameras, and sensors to assist with visibility, these systems have limitations—and cannot replace careful driving and awareness from other road users.

This week, we’ve made the #KnowTheZones campaign live in our mobile app, making it easily accessible to all users. We are encouraging ALL professional drivers to engage with the content and, more importantly, to share the message with friends, family and colleagues—especially those who regularly drive in urban areas or near commercial vehicles.

As professional drivers, you have a key role in promoting road safety. By helping others understand where these blind spots are—and how to avoid them—you’re contributing to safer roads for everyone.

Let’s spread the word: #KnowTheZones. Know the risks. Make the roads safer.
