The Highway Code – 3 new things

Following recent changes to The Highway Code, new rules have been introduced that affect all road users, with a particular focus on prioritising those most at risk. These updates have wide-reaching implications for professional and everyday drivers alike, especially in terms of liability, behaviour at junctions, and shared use of the road.
To ensure drivers are fully informed, we’ve made three key updates to The Driver Handbook platform:
- A full review and update of all Highway Code content in our HGV, Car, Van, and PCV handbooks to reflect the most recent changes
- The addition of a brand-new content page, Hierarchy of Road Users, which clearly explains the updated structure and new responsibilities
- A dedicated toolbox talk that summarises the most important changes and what they mean in practice for your drivers
At the heart of the changes is the introduction of the Hierarchy of Road Users – a principle that places greater responsibility on those who can do the most harm. This means that drivers of larger vehicles (such as PCVs, HGVs and vans) must take extra care around vulnerable road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders.
The toolbox talk covers key changes including priority at junctions, safe passing distances, and new guidance on shared spaces. With liability and legal consequences on the line, it’s essential that drivers understand and apply the updated rules in their daily operations.
All drivers should now be briefed and familiar with the changes, non-compliance could increase personal and organisational risk.
