Safe speed – June toolbox talk now available

Safe speed remains one of the most important road safety topics for professional drivers and is a key part of this year’s annual driver communication campaign.
Every driver knows that exceeding the speed limit is dangerous. However, many collisions occur when drivers are travelling within the legal limit but fail to adjust their speed to the conditions around them. The speed limit is the maximum speed permitted, not a target speed that is always safe to drive at.
For professional drivers, speed management is about much more than avoiding penalty points or enforcement action. It is about protecting themselves, their passengers, other road users and the communities in which they operate. A reduction of just a few miles per hour can significantly reduce both the likelihood and severity of a collision.
To support operators and drivers, June’s Toolbox Talk focuses on safe speed and provides a practical reminder of the rules, responsibilities and good driving behaviours associated with speed management.
The Toolbox Talk covers:
- National speed limits for different vehicle types, including the important differences between cars, vans, HGVs and PCVs operating across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
- Restricted and variable speed limits, including how temporary restrictions, smart motorway controls and mandatory speed limits are applied and enforced
- Driving at a speed appropriate for the conditions, recognising that weather, traffic, road layout, vulnerable road users and visibility can all require drivers to slow down
- Speed limiters, offences and enforcement, including the legal consequences of speeding and the risks associated with tampering with vehicle safety systems
The Toolbox Talk also highlights the growing introduction of 20 mph limits in urban and residential areas and reminds drivers that many commercial vehicles are subject to lower speed limits than private cars.
Safe driving is not simply about knowing the speed limit. It is about making professional decisions based on the environment, the vehicle and the risks present at the time.
Sometimes the safest speed is well below the legal limit.
The June Safe speed toolbox talk is available now as part of The Handbook Group annual driver communication campaign, helping operators deliver consistent, relevant and practical safety messages throughout the year.
