Cargo Express: From paper to productivity

With 95 drivers operating across five locations and mixed shift patterns, Cargo Express faced a daily logistical hurdle: how to ensure all drivers consistently received critical business information, compliance updates, and training resources.

As an Earned Recognition operator, the company is obligated to provide written driver instructions and support Continued Professional Development through regular toolbox talks. Yet relying on paper-based processes made this nearly impossible to deliver at scale, and especially not with the immediacy required after incidents or regulatory changes.

Until summer 2022, the team relied on physical memos and printed handbooks—documents that drivers would collect when available. This created delays, wasted time, and a risk that important communications weren’t received or understood. Neil Buckley, Compliance Director, knew the system was no longer fit for purpose. “We needed a solution that would work with the pace of our business,” he explained.

After exploring the market, Cargo Express chose The Driver Handbook, a mobile app and content management system (TDHConnect) tailored for fleet operators. The real win for Neil has been operational efficiency. “I’m saving four to four-and-a-half hours every week. I can upload a memo in minutes, distribute it to the whole workforce, and immediately see who’s read it, who needs prompting, and how long they spent on it.”

Cost and sustainability improvements have also followed. By significantly reducing paper and ink usage, the company has lowered its CO₂ footprint, aligning with broader environmental goals.

Neil summarised it best: “If The Driver Handbook were taken away tomorrow, I’d dread going back to paper. The efficiencies, traceability, and control we now have are invaluable.”
