PMW Quarries

PMW Quarries cuts paperwork and boosts driver engagement with The Driver Handbook

In the fast-moving world of quarry logistics, keeping drivers informed, safe, and compliant—without dragging them off the road—can be a challenge. For PMW Quarries, a leading Yorkshire-based supplier of aggregates, that challenge was growing.

The company had long sought a modern solution to reduce reliance on printed documents and manual distribution processes while improving communication with its 30+ drivers.

Although PMW sees its drivers daily and maintains strong contact, the administrative burden of distributing paper-based policies, risk assessments, and toolbox talks had become inefficient and outdated. Each driver had a tray in the office used to deliver essential documents. Drivers would collect, read, and sign each piece—but this method was slow, unreliable, and difficult to track. Storage and retrieval of signed documents created additional operational headaches.

That all changed in 2021, when PMW Quarries visited The Driver Handbook stand at the Tip-Ex event – an industry exhibition held shortly after lockdown restrictions eased. What began as a fact-finding visit soon turned into a full deployment of The Driver Handbook app and the TDHConnect® content management system just six months later.

Since implementation, The Driver Handbook has transformed the way PMW shares critical information with its drivers. The system is now used to distribute:

  • The Driver Handbook’s standard HGV content
  • Customised PMW Quarries policies, method statements, and risk assessments
  • Tailored toolbox talks and safety updates relevant to the operation

Danny Watson, Director of PMW Quarries, explained: “Historically, distributing info was a manual, paper-based process. Now we no longer need to get drivers to sign anything physical – everything’s done in TDHConnect.”
What sets the system apart is the ability to instantly track who’s seen what and for how long, something Danny calls “the miracle” of the app. “I’ve actually enjoyed uploading our content. Being able to preview how it looks on a mobile before sending it to the team is fantastic—it’s intuitive, and the layout is clean and engaging.”

Drivers now have 24/7 access to business-critical information from their mobile devices, whether they’re on-site, en route, or off duty. This accessibility has been a game-changer in terms of compliance, knowledge retention, and operational safety.

“There’s so much more to the job than just getting in the wagon and driving,” said Danny. “This tool ensures drivers are fully aware of their responsibilities, without hours spent in the office.”
The team has embraced the shift, though Danny notes it’s been a process of change:

“Some drivers took to it straight away; others needed prompting. TDHConnect helps us identify who’s engaged and who may need extra support.”

By eliminating the need for physical signatures and document storage, PMW Quarries has also contributed to a greener, more sustainable business model.

“The Driver Handbook is one of those tools that just does what you need it to.”
