Marshalls empowers drivers and cuts paper with The Driver Handbook

In a sector where driver isolation and remote working are the norm, maintaining consistent communication across a dispersed workforce is a real challenge. Marshalls, the UK’s leading hard landscaping and building products supplier, recognised this early and sought a solution that would not only strengthen engagement with its 300+ HGV drivers but also streamline communications and support sustainability goals.
With quarry and manufacturing operations spanning the length and breadth of the UK – from Scotland to St. Ives – Marshalls needed a way to ensure its drivers were connected, informed, and integrated into the wider business. In 2019, the company began the search for a digital solution to replace paper-heavy processes and deliver up-to-date operational and company information directly to drivers.
In early 2020, Marshalls deployed The Driver Handbook app and its supporting TDHConnect content management system. The implementation delivered on three key objectives to:
- Provide all HGV drivers with a digital handbook
- Deliver toolbox talks and safety updates instantly
- Share company-wide updates and internal news directly
Drivers now receive The Driver Handbook’s standard HGV content, supplemented with Marshalls’ own material, including FORS policies, safety alerts, risk assessments, and other site-specific documents. Previously delivered face-to-face and often requiring physical signatures, toolbox talks are now digital and available on demand in the app, creating consistency across all depots and saving valuable time for both drivers and site managers.
Even more impressively, Marshalls’ internal communications team now uses TDHConnect to distribute wider business updates – from cultural initiatives and employee benefits to festive operating hours – ensuring that drivers are not left out of the corporate loop.
Gary Shaw, Logistics MI & Data Analyst at Marshalls, commented:
“We’re proud to say our drivers now feel like they’re integral to our company. Where they once felt disconnected, they’re now fully informed thanks in part to The Driver Handbook.”
The benefits have been widespread:
- Drivers are more engaged and feel part of the wider Marshalls team
- Site Logistics Managers (SLMs) communicate consistently across locations
- Paper and ink usage has plummeted, aligning with Marshalls’ sustainability goals
- Reporting and traceability are improved, simplifying FORS accreditation evidence
Gary continued: “Our SLMs no longer need to wait for drivers to return to site to share documents or gather signatures. Drivers access what they need, when they need it. Digital signatures, timestamped reads, and full visibility into driver engagement – all of it is now automated through TDHConnect. It’s transformed the way we manage driver communications.”
What started as a digital driver handbook has become an integral business tool, helping Marshalls ensure its workforce is safe, informed, and operating efficiently. With real-time updates, integrated reporting, and full flexibility, The Driver Handbook has bridged the communication gap that once existed between remote drivers and the business.
